Today

I look forward to Sundays. I get to enjoy a long morning, lingering, having coffee and listening to myself, God and nature. It is my day to build faith with my spiritual community, rest and “be”. It is a 24 hour oasis in my week.

My week is spent attending to and developing my mind, body and soul, serving others, exploring, working. But what about my spirit? How much time do I spend replenishing my spirit? Is it in balance to my mind, body and soul? As I focus on my spirit, I often get little nuggets of wisdom I can apply to my life. They are hidden in the weekly oasis.

This past Sunday, as I enjoyed some journaling time, I was reminded to focus on only today. It is all I really have. No day in the future is guaranteed. I remembered a book I read over 10 years ago that challenged me to consider what I would be doing, saying and spending my time on if I had only two weeks left to live. What would I do today? Would I be annoyed so easily, hold a grudge or keep silent when I could express how much others mean to me? It made me consider and evaluate how much wasted energy I spend on things that don’t matter in the big scheme of life and actually rob me of joy. Joy from today.

As I focused only on Sunday, I noticed how my pace slowed down, every minute counted. My thoughts became more clear, I was more intentional, less impulsive. During my walk, I set out to express 5 things I am thankful for and ended up doing 25. I felt I was able to live life with a capital “L”, a common encouragement from my sister.

One precious day at a time.

Every day, not just Sunday.

This is the day the Lord has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it.
