The Forgotten Seed

April 3, 2018

It was my junior year of high school and my cousin was getting married in New York. They wanted a member of our family to attend and I was the lucky one chosen to go.

I had always dreamed of living in New York and I snatched up the t-shirts and bumper stickers to prove it.

I was considered the “city girl” in my family, even though I grew up on a farm. I gravitated toward fashion, city adventure, the cultural opportunities, masses of people, the city life. That was 38 years ago.

My career path as a life coach led me to pursue training in positive psychology.  My son discovered the Flourishing Center program and suggested I enroll.  Shortly after, he was accepted into NYU.  This confirmed my decision and I spent one weekend a month for 7 months in NYC.

During the first flight into the city, I was flooded with a sense of awe and fulfillment.  It was at that moment when I realized my hearts’ dream at sixteen years old, was coming to fruition. I had completely forgotten about it.

The little seed planted in my heart at such a young age mattered and was bearing fruit in my life. I was not consciously award of the seed taking root and growing throughout the years, preparing me for my future adventures, but as I navigated the city, I felt a sense of belonging and joy. It was empowering.

This dream was worth celebrating even though it had been delayed, or maybe it was right on time!  During my program, I learned how individuals who contributed extraordinary gifts to our world, experienced challenges, obstacles and years and years of waiting and laboring.  The seeds in these lives had to take root, grow, and be properly nourished in order to bear fruit for others.

The greatest surprise of all is the fact that my son “caught” the dream as he lives and thrives in NYC. I received a double blessing as we shared new experiences exploring the city. My love for the city was passed down to the next generation.

That is the fruit of life.

We never know what seeds are taking root underground in our lives.  I feel compelled to encourage others, no matter what age, to DREAM!

The younger generation if full of ideas and their souls are the rich soil for the “dreams” to take root. The fruit they bear from those small seeds can become a conduit to an ordinary person doing extraordinary things.

Nothing is impossible with God.
